MOSQUES
Hisar
Mosque:
This
mosque is located the Hisarönü place behind the castle that
was torn down in 1872 in todays Kemeraltı Bazaar. Yakup Bey
ordered it to be built in 1592. It is the largest and most
spectular mosque in Izmir. It includes a central dome and
a ‘’harim mekanı’’ (the real place of pray) covered with small
domes and a domed mihrab, the last congregation place. The
mosque with its restored minaret represents the typical characteristic
of the classical Ottoman Era’s Mosques. Inside the mosque
you can see panels, mihrab and mimbar works and you can find
the most terrific examples of the ‘’Turkish taste of art’’.
Kestane
Pazarı Mosque:
This
mosque was built in 1667. It has a centrally domed harim place
and the last congregation place. The mihrab’s stone arts works
are worth seeing. There are panels that are full of multi-colored
glass on the last congregation places side that looks to the
courtyard.
The
Salepçioğlu Mosque:
It
is the largest domed mosque. Salepçizade Hacı Ahmed Efendi
ordered to be built in 1906. The exterior walls of the mosque
are made of marble and these walls are covered with green
stones. It takes its place among the best mosques in the late
Izmir Era Mosques.
Şadırvan
Mosque (Fountains Mosque):
It
takes its name from the Şadırvans (fountains used for ritual
ablutions) found on its side and under it. It was erected
in 1636 and has a single minaret (with a balcony around it)
on its east side and a library on its west. These mosques
are distributed in the Kemeraltı Bazaar region.
The
Başdurak Mosque:
This
mosque is also known as the ‘’Hadji Hüseyin Mosque’’. It was
built in 1652. A single dome covers the mosque and there are
shops under it. It is situated in the ‘’Anafartalar Bazaar’’.
The
Konak Yalı Mosque:
It
stands in ‘’Konak Square’’. Mehmet Pascha’s doughter, Ayşe
ordered it to be built in 1754. It reflects a classical Ottoman
architectural style. It is a pretty structure with a single
dome and is decorated with tiles composed of classical ottoman
motifs.
The
Kemeraltı Mosque:
This
structure which was erected in the 17th century
has a central dome. The traditional art of Islamic carigraphy
of the 18th century is worth seeing. There is a
sebil (the traditional Turkish fountain) at the end of the
mosque dating back to the same period. This mosque stands
in the entrance of the Kemeraltı Bazaar.
