KEMERALTI BAZAAR

Anafartalar Street that made up the beginning of the Kemeraltı Bazaar of the previous centuries begins, from the quarter of Mezarlıkbaşı that includes the coastal side and draws curves, and reaches to konak Square. The reason of the formation of this curve lies in the construction of the street around the interior harbor of the previous centuries. Through the harbors starting point new settlements and commercial grounds are set and that spots gained estimation with these constructions.

In 1592, Hisar Mosque was errected in front of the Castle Gate. Between 1650 and 1670 a part of the Harbor was filled and a bazaar was established on it. In 1744 Kızlarağası Inn was built. After that, the sea-front of Hisar that is on the interior harbor side was filled and in 1875 the front side of the interior harbor was filled for the construction of the wharf and the shore was shaped as today.

Kemeraltı Bazaar, from the quarter of mezarlıkbaşı to konak, is shaped around the area which is told above. The bazaar was seen like a covered Bazaar with its partly vaulted, the bricked side streets and with ikb ancient bazaars. In the first years that it was built. Until the recent years, it kept its covered status from Şadırvanaltı Mosque to Havra Road. The Bazaar took its name ‘’Kemeralti’’ from this feature that is covered in this part.

Some upside part of the today’s tiny roads that was opened verticaly to the Bazaar were covered with barrel vaults. The other side roads that was opened to these and ancient bazaars were formed. There were many inns in the Bazaar.

In the previous century, the region thet stands interior part of Anafartalar Street and Gazi Bulvar curve, that mates the last harbor border had densely the old inns, bedestens. Mostly it adressed to the local society, low and middle classes, it was stored for commercial affairs and manual work activities.

Today Kemeraltı Bazaar is the most significant shopping center of Izmir besides the concealing vaults of the past and domed-shops, and with its contemporary labor centers, modern shops, cinemas and cafes it is a city-state that every kind of shopping. In this bazaar the ceramics from traditional Turkish manual arts, like-panels, products of timber, carpets and small rugs, and every kind of leather out puts are obtainable.
